A comparative test drive between Toyota Supra and Toyota86.
(video has been attached to very bottom page)
“Is 86 more fun?” or “Supra is more fun?” I think Toyota86 is more fun!
I will talk the reasons in this article. By the way, the steering ratio of Supra is similar to Ferrari’s quick ratio. This steering ratio with this wheelbase is a “transcending handling machine”. It’s been a while since the new Supra was released, but one thing that was often said at the beginning of the release was that “the significance of 86’s existence has diminished.” However, this time, compared to the new Supra (6-cylinder turbo) and 86 (TRD version limited to the US market), the technical youtuber Engeneering Explained has drawn the surprising conclusion that “86 is more fun than Supra”.
◾️ IN those points, Toyota 86 is better than Supra
The reason why Engeneering Explained felt that “86 is more fun” is that it is “lighter in weight”. A comparison chart of specifications is posted below, but the 86 is up to 200 kg lighter than the Supra (6-cylinder model). Certainly the Supra has higher power, but considering that both cars are FR rather than “forced bending” cars with torque vectoring 4WD, it seems that the lighter has less inertia and is easier to control.
And next is that the 86 has a “manual transmission”. There is no doubt that AT has a certain point in terms of “running fast”, but if it is “fun” it may be MT.
◾️ The steering ratio of the new Supra is super quick
The “steering ratio” is very interesting in new Supra. it is called rock-to-rock, 2.1 for Supra and 2.5 for 86. 86 is slower, so it seems easier to control. However, some people would say this is “too quick/fast” for Supra. From what I know, Lamborghini Huracan is “2” and Ferrari 458/488 is also “2”. That is, Supra’s 2.1 it means Supra is like super cars.
Other than that, the McLaren 720S is “2.5 (slow for a super car)”, Subaru WRX STI (Type RA) is “2.1”, Honda S660 is “2.8”, Mazda Roadster is “2.6”, and Alpine A110 is “2.2”. and just FYI, VGS (Variable Gear Ratio Steering) of Honda S2000 is startling 1.4!! On the other hand, it is a sports car that has a slow ratio, but the Porsche 911 “2.62” and the Alfa Romeo 4C “2.75”. * This may be because the wheelbase is short.
My impression is that the if it’s “2” I do not have to change my position on steering. though, when it comes to “3”, I have to turn around the steering.
I haven’t actually driven the new Supra, but it’s certain that a Supra wheelbase (2470 mm) and it comes with 2.1 steering it means “super-quick” feel (Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari 488 GTB wheels). Both bases are over 2600 mm).
In addition, he said that the 86 has a much better visibility, and considering various factors, there is “86 is fun to manipulate” and “Supra is stoic and pursues speed” It may be a car (Toyota also uses the expression that the 86 is a training aircraft and the Supra is a fighter).

◾️ There is no doubt that the Toyota 86 is a “fun to ride” car
What I think of the Toyota 86 is, “There is no other car that can have such a deep dialogue.” * Limited to manual transmissions From the perspective of dialogue with cars, Mazda Roadsters are often referred to, but I think that 86 is more delicate and “you can communicate your car while driving ”.
And the Toyota 86 is a car that can not run fast unless basic driving lesson is firmly done, and on the curve, depress the brake to move the load, turn the steering to change the direction of the car, step on the accelerator to maintain the direction It is necessary to perform an operation to escape the curve while doing so (while the engine speed must not drop). I can’t drive 86 fast if you missing something, but I think the exhilaration when everything is “fixed” is exceptional (it’s very similar to the Porsche 911).
On the other hand, in the case of Supra, “slow down sharply,” “turn the steering wheel,” “step on the “step down the accelerator” makes the car’s excellent control system run at its own speed. it’s more like “modern supercar” .
And the difference in the basic performance to achieve that, the presence or absence of electronic devices is probably the “price difference between 86 and Supra”.
